The Patriot-News reported today that plans have been scrapped to renovate the Hershey Country Club's West Course. Instead, the HCC is set to embark on a three-year plan to add to the East Course in hopes of attracting a national tournament again.
Beyond that, the Patriot-News report adds that "upon completion of the new East Course in the spring of 2011, construction will begin on a modern practice facility, a full-scale golf academy and some additional parking, all in close proximity to the clubhouse."
The Hershey Country Club has a rich tradition, and it's nice to see a commitment to improve the courses now that a much-needed new clubhouse has been opened. Milton Hershey was a noted fan of golf, and personally signed golfing great Ben Hogan to a contract as HCC golf pro. It was a unique arrangement at the time: Hogan's only responsibilities included continuing to compete around the country and letting Hershey use his likeness for advertising. The photo shows Ben Hogan at the 1940 PGA tournament, which was hosted by the Hershey Country Club.
