Hershey is a great place to live if you're a chocolate lover -- especially lately. With The Hershey Company moving into premium chocolate lines, I no longer have to special-order my favorite European brands to get my fix of quality chocolate. I can head across town to Hershey's Chocolate World and pick up a few Scharffen Berger Nibs bars, a Dagoba bar or two, or one of the Hershey's Cacao Reserve packages.
But last week, I found a Hershey's product at Target that I hadn't seen at Chocolate World before. It's a mouthful to say: Cacao Reserve by Hershey's Ultra-Thin Squares in Orange Dark Chocolate. But these squares aren't a mouthful to eat -- just a thin layer of flavor and chocolate, perfect with an after-dinner drink or a smooth Caffe Americano (and only 15 calories per square, not too shabby!)
When I saw "Mfd in Germany" on the box, I was curious. Could it be a partnership with Hachez, a chocolate company located near my dad's hometown? It looks suspiciously similar to the Hachez Cocoa d'Arriba line. And the taste was unlike anything else from the Cacao Reserve line, or anything else "Hershey" for that matter.
So I asked, and thanks to M, got my answer from a reliable source at The Hershey Company:
"The Cacao Reserve by Hershey's Thins is a line of Cacao Reserve chocolates that is sold exclusively at Target....there are four flavors:
- - Dark Chocolate
- - Milk Chocolate
- - Raspberry flavored chocolate
- - Orange flavored chocolate
They are co-manufactured for us in Germany with Cacao Reserve by Hershey's chocolate paste that is different from the traditional Hershey paste, thus the flavor difference."
So I still don't know about a Hachez connection...but I do know enough to recommend that you get to a Target near you and pick up a box of the Thins to try. I'm thinking some Raspberry Thins with Chambord after Easter dinner would be nice...
It turns out that the dark chocolate ones make the best s'mores in history. Hopefully the product won't just be a one-shot experiment.
